My new favorite non-English song is Patrick Breul's "A Contretemps." He is best known to American audiences as the French photographer in the Julia Ormond/Harrison Ford/Greg Kinnear version of Sabrina. I'll put my very home-made translation in the comments.
Paraît qu'on a changé d'histoire ?
Dis rien j'veux pas savoir
Appuie ta main sur mon bras
Dansons comme une autre fois
Un rendez-vous galant
Pour quelques pas, quelques temps.
Dis-moi pour qui tu rêves
Ce sourire sur tes lèvres
Dans cette drôle de ronde
Tu tournes et la nuit tombe
Et même si tout à changer
Ce p'tit air n'peut pas t'oublier...

[translation help appreciated, esp. with line 2 in the 2nd stanza, and with "javas." A "guinguette" is something between a cafe and a night-club without a English equivalent]
You appeared
on the Nogent coast
in guinguette for two
that you haunted
before the world went mad.
The sky appeared paler
When you sing for more than two (?)
You speak less
After all these years
Tell me, tell me what you do.
Tell me who you dance for
These javas (?), these love songs
under the gaze of the world
These songs tell the story
and even if it all changes
This little song won't forget.
Dreams of us appear
a bit off-rhythm
Hazy love fills my heart
images in black and white
With just a little of our color
History appears to have changed
Anything I say I don't want to know
Lay your hand on my arm
Dance like we did before
at our rendez-vous
for a few steps, a few moments
Tell me who you dream of
this smile on your lips
With a funny twirl
you turn and the night falls
Even if it all changes
This little song won't forget you.
annie, i'll write you a real message in response to your nice e-mail. thought i'd help with the ?? in translation:
javas refers to a dance. la javanaise.
the sky appears less blue when we are no longer singing together (the "ne" was dropped before the verb--as often happens in colloquial french)
salut,
nancy
Ah Nancy! I was hoping you would find this! Thanks. I knew I was missing something.
