I thought Cat Stevens' "Trouble" was quintessential melancholy...but listening to Elliot Smith's cover--there is breaking in my heart.

They both tear my heart apart--Stevens for becoming Yusuf Islam, and Smith for taking his life. Listening to Smith sing this song, knowing his eventually demise, I can't imagine a sadder song.
